Reviews

"Tyler Perkins, back from Iraq, returns to Wyoming for two reasons. One is to forget what happened during his tour of duty. The other reason is to fulfill a promise to his 86-year-old friend, Soren Andeman. As the hiking trip evolves, we see that both men have wrongs they want to make right and consciences to heal. Tyler has to heal in order to have a fruitful future, and Soren to prepare for meeting his Maker. Both discover that their sins of the past are not that much different, and they must forgive themselves before they can be ready for the future. The book's end left me wanting to read more from Tom Morrisey. An easy read for lazy summer days."

"His time in combat in Iraq still haunts Tyler pErkins; just ask his beleaguered wife Angela. Thus he has a second reason to take his octogenarian friend Soren Andeman fly fishing; the first being he promised to do so. The pair travels to Wind River, Idaho for some getaway time. However, the R&R that Tyler expected is nuked when Soren reveals the real reasons he wanted to come to Wind River, a place he has been before. His dark secret frightens Tyler and if revealed could hurt those nearby including someone special to the eighty-six years old man. However, before he can come to grips with what Soren told him, the weather turns ugly making this respite into a battle of survival. This is an excellent buddy tale as an elderly honorable man with a troubling secret, a just as honorable vet with post traumatic stress disorder and the weather make for a deep character driven thriller. The story line is driven by the duel fuels of doing the right thing and surviving. readers will relish this compelling tale as two men decades apart in age seek forgiveness and redemption in the wilderness, but as they battle to survive realize where they must truly go to achieve atonement. Wind River is an excellent inspirational thriller."

"The latest wilderness adventure offered by Tom Morrissey, author of In High Places, paints a splendid outdoor vista, taking readers to the Wyoming mountains in an artful way. Unfortunately, though excellently crafted in the written word, Wind River doesn't quite result in the same engrossing story as his previous novels.

"Tyler Perkins has returned from Iraq scarred and troubled. Withdrawn from his frustrated but devoted young wife, detached from work, church, and everything else, Tyler is killing time, going nowhere fast.

"When he receives a postcard from an aging childhood friend asking for one more fishing trip into the mountains before he becomes too ill, Tyler sees a chance for healing.

"However, once in the mountains, Tyler's faced with difficult choices. Old friend Soren Andeman isn't what he used to be, both physically and mentally.

"Yet he continues to take risks along their journey, wanting to go farther up into the mountains than Tyler thinks is safe. A secret is hidden there, however--a painful burden that's been carried for years and must finally be laid to rest, even if it means sacrificing a life.

"No one can argue Morrisey's skill with the written word. For most readers, that will suffice here. However, Wind River is told from a limited third-person perspective. The reader must rely on characters' exterior actions and descriptions to guess their thoughts and motivations. Some readers may find this makes it difficult to connect with the characters, which is often just as important as excellent craft."

"Tyler Perkins, who grew up fly-fishing in the mountains of Wyoming, is now driving for UPS and trying to forget his experiences in Iraq. Withdrawn from his wife, he is withering inside until he returns to Wyoming to take a back-country trip with an old and elderly friend who wants to see and fish his old haunts once more before he dies. Surrounded by the beauty and majesty of the created world, both men deal with their need to face up to their past actions so as to be free of their curse.

"The novel's descriptions are vivid: Tom Morrisey, an outdoor adventure writer, knows well his Wyoming landscape."
