21. Psalms: The Songbook of Ancient Israel

Discussion Questions

  1. How should contemporary worshipers use the psalms?
  2. Do you find any guidelines for the use of instruments in worship in the book of Psalms?
  3. What do you find to be missing in our worship services today that is part of the psalms?
  4. What music that is used in churches today is closest to that which was used in worship in the Old Testament?

Class Activities

  1. Divide the class into seven groups of students. Assign a type of psalm to each group. Have each group find another example of the type of psalm they have been assigned. Conclude the session with each group reporting what they have found. Class time allowed: 25 minutes.
  2. Have the class read Psalm 136 as a responsive reading, with the first section of each verse being read by a selected worship leader, and the last part, “His love endures forever,” read by the class together.
