Chapter
17. First and Second Chronicles: A Look Back
Discussion Questions
- The books of Chronicles are known as the first commentary on the Scriptures. Why?
- Why do you think the Chronicler had a purpose different from the author of the books of Samuel or Kings?
- Did the Chronicler discriminate against Solomon by noting his evil deeds and not noting the sins of David?
- Do you think that the books of Chronicles are actually necessary to the history of Israel? Why?
- Does the emphasis on the temple in Chronicles give us any support for placing an emphasis on church buildings today?
Class Activities
- Divide the class into eight small groups. Assign one of the kings to each group: David, Solomon, Ahaz, Abijah, Asa, Jehosaphat, Ahaziah, Joash. Have the groups use the criteria for assessment of kings on the transparency to assess the king they have been assigned. Conclude with a feedback session involving all eight groups. Class time allowed: 30 minutes.
- Lead a class discussion on the importance of the genealogy in chapters 1–7 of 1 Chronicles. Focus on why these are included.
